Name Game?

“Shirley, Shirley, Bo Birley, Banana Fana Fo Firley.” When Shirley Ellis sang the song back in the 60s, it was called “The Name Game.” But when people buy products containing fur, the name is no game.

The FTC’s Fur Rules require manufacturers and retailers to label fur products with certain information, like the name of the animal and the garment’s country of origin. The Fur Products Name Guide gives the English name for fur-producing animals and lists them by genus-species.

In March 2011, the FTC announced it was reviewing the Guide and asked for feedback on the Fur Rules. The next step: a half-day public hearing on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the FTC’s Conference Center, 601 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C., to get input on whether to amend the Guide. Should the agency continue with the current naming system? Should it modify, add or delete names for certain species?

The hearing, required by Congress under the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2010, is part of the FTC’s systematic review of its rules and guides.
